Link between Pneumonia and Faecal Egg Count?

Print Article

Kathryn McRae, a research scientist at the AgResearch Invermay Campus, has been investigating the genetic relationship between pneumonic lesions in the lungs of lambs at slaughter and a range of measured traits including faecal egg count (FEC). She discovered a moderate, positive genetic relationship between pneumonia and FEC, where animals with severe cases of pneumonia tended to have higher FEC.
Although moderate, this relationship could be important for the sheep industry. Further work is needed to investigate this genetic correlation between pneumonia and FEC.
